HOW IT STARTED
In 2021 Loryanne Bessette, a 23-year-old university student living with intractable epilepsy set out on an incredible feat, to run 100km in 24 hours! Loryanne wanted both to raise money and awareness. At the height of COVID, Loryanne wanted to encourage others to join her on her epic adventure and what started out as a small local fundraiser, turned into a grassroots virtual run, with people participating and running their own distances across the country.

From that event, the 1 IN 100 event was born! Now in it’s fourth year, Epilepsy Canada hosts the 1 IN 100 virtually across the country in hopes of raising money to find the cures, as well as raising awareness about the disease and dismantling stigma and stereotypes.
OUR CHARITY

Epilepsy Canada is a charity dedicated to advancing treatments and finding cures for epilepsies.

We believe that research will lead us to those cures.

We believe that educating our communities about epilepsy not only as a medical condition, but about the emotional, mental, social and economic effects that come along with it can bring new understanding and improve the lives of patients and caregivers alike.

We believe that more people talking about epilepsy, with more voices lifted together can create greater change. And that greater public knowledge and understanding about epilepsy will lead to more research dollars aimed at finding a cure.

Fund Research. Find THE CureS.

OUR CAUSE
Approximately 360,000 Canadians live with epilepsy (about 1% of the population) and 65 million people worldwide.

According to recent estimates, in up to 50% of patients diagnosed with epilepsy, the cause is unknown.

30% of people who are diagnosed will have drug-resistant epilepsy.

Epilepsy affects more people than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s combined – yet receives fewer federal dollars per patient than each of these.

OUR MOTIVATION

You! Your family! The epilepsy community!

While our specific reasons for supporting Epilepsy Canada might differ, we are all hopeful that our commitment to research will bring the epilepsy community one step closer to finding the cures for this disease.
Your participation will help us to continue on the road toward epilepsy cures.

The courage of those living with epilepsy,
inspires us and fuels our journey.
